Gas Flow Meter

A gas flow meter is device, which is used to measure the flow rate of gas within a certain area. Flow meters, in general, can either measure volumetric flow rate or mass flow rate. The unit used for measuring volumetric flow rates is cubic per second (m3/sec). In measuring mass flow rates however, the unit used is kilograms per second (kg/sec).

There are many types of flow meters. There are flow meters that can be used to perform a medical diagnostic test. The type of flow meters use din the medical field is the peak flow meter.

It is used to determine the lung capacity of asthmatic clients.

There are many other uses of flow meters, especially in the industrial aspect. Industries involving food processing, water management and semi conductor fabrications are just some of the many that use flow meters.

The classification of the flow meters is based on the type of operation where it is used. Different types of flow meters provide different functions.

One type of flow meter is the Coriolis flow meter. A Coriolis flow meter is used to measure mass flow rates. In this type, the Coriolis concept measures the mass of liquids passing through two vibrating pipies.

By observing the pattern of the waves produced by the vibrating tubes, changes in the flow rates of the liquid substance are associated to come up to a correlated conclusion.

Another type of flow meters is the Ultrasonic flow meter. The ultrasonic flow meter also uses correlation of waves, in this case sound waves, to get the flow rate. In this type pf flow meter, two ultrasound wave transmitters are used.

Each of them is placed at the opposite ends of a pipe. The measurement of the flow rate is done on the transmitters, which each of them sends a sound pulse.

Each of the transmitters does not work only as a sender, but it also receives the wave transmitted by the other from the other side. Since both sides transmit sound waves, one wave goes with the flow of the liquid and the other goes the opposite way. In this case, the flow rate is determined when the transmitted wave is received by the other side.


An innovated type of ultrasound flow meter is the Doppler shift flow meter. This is used in the type of ultrasound devices for pregnant women. In a Doppler shift, the flow rate is determined when there are changes in the frequency and amplitude of a sound wave that bounces off from a solid matter that is in the liquid.

Then there is the gas flow meter that could measure a multitude of gasses for you. Often used as far as health is the fowmeter that measure the rate of oxygen a person gets. Very important stuff for something you can’t see.
